If you’ve changed your name after marriage, one of the most important updates you’ll need to make is to your Florida driver’s license. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requires that your ID reflect your legal name—and the process is fairly straightforward if you know what to expect.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make the update as smooth as possible.

Click here for our complete guide on how to change your name in Florida.

Step-by-Step: Update Your Florida Driver’s License Name After Marriage

1. Change Your Name with the Social Security Administration First

Before heading to the DMV, you must first update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This is because the FLHSMV will electronically verify your name through the SSA database.

To update your name with SSA:

  • Complete Form SS-5

  • Submit it along with your certified marriage certificate and ID

  • Visit your local SSA office or mail the documents

  • Wait at least 48–72 hours before visiting the DMV

2. Gather the Required Documents

You’ll need to bring the following to your DMV appointment:

  • Current Florida driver’s license

  • Certified marriage certificate

  • Proof of Social Security number (SS card, W-2, or SSA letter)

  • Two proofs of Florida residency (utility bill, lease, mortgage, etc.)

3. Visit a Florida DMV Office in Person

Florida does not allow name changes online. You must visit a driver license service center in person.

Find a location and schedule an appointment:

4. Pay the Required Fee

  • Standard replacement license fee: $25

  • If renewing or upgrading to a REAL ID, additional fees may apply

5. Receive Your Updated License

You’ll typically receive a temporary paper license immediately, and your new official license will arrive by mail within 7–10 business days.

Tips

  • Consider upgrading to a REAL ID if you haven’t already—you’ll need it for domestic flights starting in May 2025.

  • Don’t forget to update your name with your car insurance provider and other related services.
