If you recently got married and plan to take your spouse’s last name (or combine names), one of your first steps should be updating your name on your Texas driver’s license. This ensures your ID matches your legal name and helps you avoid issues when traveling, voting, or dealing with financial institutions.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you update your name with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Click here for our complete guide on how to change your name in Texas.

  • Step-by-Step Update Your Name on Your Texas Driver’s License
  • 1. Update Your Name with the Social Security Administration First
  • 2. Gather the Required Documents
  • 3. Visit a Texas DPS Office In Person
  • 4. Receive Your Updated License

Step-by-Step: Update Your Name on Your Texas Driver’s License

1. Update Your Name with the Social Security Administration First

Before you go to the DPS, you must update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The DPS will verify your new name in the federal database when processing your new license.

To update your name with the SSA:

  • Complete the SS-5 form

  • Submit it with proof of identity and your certified marriage certificate

  • Mail or take it to your local SSA office

Wait at least 48–72 hours after the SSA confirms your name update before visiting the DPS.

2. Gather the Required Documents

Bring the following with you to the DPS office:

  • Your current Texas driver’s license

  • Your certified marriage certificate as legal proof of your name change

  • Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or SSA correspondence with your new name)

3. Visit a Texas DPS Office In Person

Name changes must be done in person at a DPS driver license office. You cannot change your name online or by mail.

You’ll:

  • Fill out a new application

  • Have your photo and thumbprint taken

  • Pay the required fee

Cost: Usually $11 for a corrected license (may vary slightly by county)

4. Receive Your Updated License

You’ll receive a temporary license on the spot, and your new one will arrive by mail within 2–3 weeks.

Additional Tips

  • You do not need to retake your driving test

  • If your license is due for renewal soon, consider combining your name change with your renewal to save time and fees

  • If you also need a REAL ID, now is a great time to make that upgrade (bring proof of residency and identity)
