The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) handles all title and registration updates, and the process must be done in person at a branch office.

Before you can change your name on your vehicle title or registration, your Michigan driverโs license must already reflect your new name. If you havenโt updated your license yet, youโll need to bring your court order, marriage certificate, or divorce decree to a Michigan SOS branch office first.
